Before You Begin: A Word about Safety

We understand that this is a trick you might want to learn on your own, but if you have the means and want to learn proper form and execution, you should consider finding a gymnastics tutor or instructor. If this doesn’t sound like the right move for you, at least have a friend nearby to “spot” you while you’re learning how to do a backflip on the ground.

Practice Your Tucking Motion with a Chin-Up Bar

Chin-up bars are a godsend to those wanting to learn a backflip. Whether you use one at a gym or a home model, make sure it’s located above your head (and obviously, that it’s sturdy and will not fall down under your weight).

To practice the proper motion, simply follow these steps:

  1. Use your newly-improved vertical leap to grab the bar.
  2. Tuck those knees in as close to your chest as you can get them – it’s difficult to resist throwing your head back to accomplish it, but this will ruin your form – don’t do it!
  3. If you’re able to, continue to “roll” all the way back through your arms, landing safely back on your feet.

If you were able to follow these steps all the way through #3, congratulations! You’ve completed the basic motion you’ll be using when doing a backflip from the ground.

The Trampoline: It’s Time to Bounce!

While you might feel like you’re ready at this point, we still urge you to practice the move on a trampoline before you go about trying it from the ground. This will allow you to execute your backflip from vertical height offered by a much higher bounce than your legs alone will get you.

Your First Off-the-Ground Backflip: The Big Moment

Alright – the big day has arrived: you’re ready to perform your first backflip on the ground!

First, you need to warm up. Even for young people and those in great shape, backflips take their toll on the body, and it’s easy to strain muscles while performing them. Stretch your ankles, arms, legs, wrists, and even your neck before you begin.

Now, let’s look at how to do a backflip on the ground – for real this time!

  1. Stand firmly on your toes – shoulder-width apart.
  2. Rise up, putting your weight on your toes and stretch your arms into the air, as straight as you can get them.
  3. Bend your knees deeply (90 degrees – a straight line parallel to the ground), then throw your arms backward.
  4. Jump as high in the air as you can muster! Use the backswing of your arms to create your backward momentum. Do not throw your head back with your arms! Resist your body’s natural temptation to arch your back, as well.
  5. When you hit the peak of your vertical leap, tuck your knees into your chest – just like you did with the chin-up bar.
  6. Look for your landing! At the half-way point, your body should be entirely upside-down. Tilt your head back slightly to see where (and how) you’ll use your legs to “stick the landing.”
  7. Untuck your knees, the land firmly on your feet.

If you give it some thought you’ll come to the realization that playgrounds are made for parkour. They are literally designed to challenge a child to move their body and are literally comprised of obstacles. They might be child-sized but with some creativity, you can absolutely have an awesome place to work on your skills.

A big advantage to a playground is that it is a public space meaning- you won’t get in trouble for training there! They also have unique equipment for you to jump and climb on, simulating the kinds of equipment you would find in a parkour gym.

3. Head to the Beach

This spot is often overlooked. Parkour at the beach? How? You may have a hard time finding suitable structures to climb, but you have sand on your side at the beach. Sand is very forgiving when practicing ground skills such as flipping, long jumps, and other tricks you have a higher chance of busting your butt while trying to execute. If you don’t have access to a gym with a trampoline you will find the next best place to practice your tricks is in the sand.

4. Find an Open Field

Second best to the beach is an open field. You can find softer spots in the grass to practice your flips and tricks on while lessening your chance of experiencing some major pain. If you want to get creative drag a trash can, bring a large box, or find a table to practice your vaults.

5. Wheelchair Ramps

Piggybacking off of our vaulting comment- wheelchair ramps are the perfect place to get your practice in. You can also walk them to gain more balance and practice your dropping technique– just make absolutely sure they are stable.

6. Take It to the Woods

If you’re wondering about where to practice parkour (legally) that will provide you with great training routes, a forest is another spot. Running through the woods will force you to constantly think on your toes and challenge your athleticism. You can also use trees as obstacles and for honing in on your climbing skills. Everyone has a blast climbing tree and when it comes to parkour it will actually benefit you. Climbing trees forces the firing of minor muscles which contributes to big gains in skill.

7. Public Parks

Public parks are everywhere- you just have to find them and choose your route. You can vault off of benches, climb trees or other concrete obstacles, practice jumps, drops, and running. An advantage to public parks is that there is a lot of room to practice whatever skill you’re looking to practice- and they’re usually peaceful and beautiful.

If you’re wondering where to practice parkour, cities are full of obstacles begging to be found. Use your parkour vision to locate different rails and obstacles and have fun! Don’t know where to practice parkour? If you have a backyard, you have a place to train. You can either use it to practice your tricks or you can move obstacles in to create your own at home gym! Obstacles don’t need to be anything fancy to get the job done. Something like a picnic table, for example, can be both useful for when you have friends over and serve as an obstacle for drops, vaulting, and practicing tricks.

After you do this comfortably, you can balance on one foot and then, start walking the rails.

Running is a large portion of parkour. You will be using the momentum created by running to propel yourself over obstacles and get you from point A to point B as quickly as possible. If you want to give yourself a leg up on conditioning the body for running you can add distance running and sprinting to your training regimen.

Practice precision jumps by picking a point to land on before jumping and then complete the jump. Challenge yourself by picking small spots to land on or increasing the distance of the jump.

In parkour basics you need to practice actively dropping from a higher to a lower level. In the beginning, don’t drop from anything higher than the height of your body. You need to condition yourself to the stress experienced during a drop and how to properly land which brings us to our next skill.

A proper landing is one of the most important skills in parkour basics. It ensures that you will not hurt yourself. It also ensures that you can land efficiently enough to move on to the next obstacle as quickly as possible. Your goal is to land softly and in the beginning, on two feet. When you practice your drops bend your knees as you land (no more than 90 degrees). You want to first land on the balls of your feet, shoulder-width apart to equally distribute the weight and absorb shock.

Safety tip: pay attention to where you are landing- if you are not in a gym there may be glass or other obstructions on the ground that could injure you.
