Intro

The brand Feiyue got its start in the 1920s in Shanghai, China. By the 1930s, Feiyue, which means “Great Leap Forward” or “Flying Forward” were producing a shoe that had gained a reputation for being flexible, comfortable and robust, perfect for athletes and martial artists. Feiyue shoes quickly became a popular choice. And they were even worn by performers during the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing to highlight Chinese culture. Today, they are still an immensely popular brand among martial artists, particularly wushu practitioners and Shaolin monks. And they still hold a prominent position in Chinese athletics.

Now you can add the parkour community to the list that has adopted this simple, highly flexible, low cost shoe. Although somewhat polarizing, Feiyues are absolutely adored by many traceurs. If you’ve been in the parkour community for any length of time, it is hard to not come across them or hear them being recommended by someone.

Continue on to the rest of the review to find out why they’ve become so popular.

Comfort

Feiyues are certainly far different from the average running shoe. Due to the lack of cushioning (we’ll talk more about this later) your feet may be sore from wearing them simply because they aren’t strong enough. If you aren’t used to minimalist shoes, give it some time for your feet to get stronger and adapt. Otherwise, I find them to be quite comfortable and so do most others. They do have a somewhat wider fit. If you find that they aren’t quite snug enough a trick is to lace them up with the “over and under” method rather than the typical criss cross style.  The canvas upper provides acceptable breathability. The laces end further down on the foot than most other shoes, around the top of the arch of your foot. This isn’t uncomfortable, but it does give them a different feel.

Flexibility / Sensitivity

Feiyues are incredibly flexible. This is one of their biggest strengths. You can bend, twist, and crumple the sole up in any way you want. Similarly, the thin canvas upper provides unimpeded ankle flexibility. However, this obviously comes at the cost of no ankle support. This is an advantage to most that are looking to buy this type of shoe though.

Feiyues are also incredibly sensitive compared to your run of the mill running shoes. You can feel pretty much everything underneath them. This sensitivity makes balancing on rails very fun when you combine it with the incredible flexibility they exhibit. To a small extent, the shoe is capable of bending around rails. They are also great for precision, provided you have good landing technique.

Cushioning

Feiyue-Cushioning

Zero. Okay, technically there is a little bit of cushioning provided. However, Feiyues are going to do very little in regards to absorbing shock. It’s not what they were designed for. If your parkour training includes lots of drops and heavy impacts your technique will need to be spot on to avoid injury. Because Feiyues won’t cover up any mistakes in technique, they can be very useful for practicing landings, even if don’t use them as your primary parkour shoe. This is largely what I’ve used them for in the past.

If you are just transitioning to a shoe with this minimal level of padding, please take it very slow at first. If you want a pair of shoes that will give you a little more protection but are still minimalist leaning, check out Asics’ Onitsuka Tiger Ultimate 81s.

Weight

Given the simplicity and minimalist nature of Feiyues, you would be correct in assuming that they are very light. However, they definitely aren’t the absolute lightest out there you could find. This is because of the slab of rubber they use for the sole. The balance of the shoe is actually a little more exaggerated than normal running shoes as there is really no weight above the sole of the shoe. For martial artists, balance is everything. Without it, it’s hard to achieve proper stance, which makes executing moves more complicated. In addition, the light weight of the shoes allow for faster footwork and leg speed, a must for martial arts.

Grip

Feiyue-Sole-Grip

Overall, the grip on Feiyues is pretty good to great, but don’t expect something like Five Ten rubber. They grip well on most surfaces, although they struggle a lot in wet conditions. If you have good technique the grip will be more than enough though. After all, grip is seriously important in parkour if you are making more difficult and riskier jumps. One slip could result in major bodily harm, so finding a shoe with great grip is crucial. That’s why Feiyue shoes are one of the best in the business. The real issue with the sole is the durability.

Durability

The grip wears down quickly with any sort of heavy training, especially cat leaps and wall runs. The rest of the shoe is pretty durable and includes metal eyelets. Nothing is likely to cause you any real problems before the grip is completely destroyed, which isn’t necessarily saying very much. In isolation, I would rate the durability as poor, but for the price you can’t really expect very much. Considering you could buy several pairs of Feiyues for the same price as most other parkour shoes, the durability issue disappears.

Recap

In the parkour world, Feiyues are pretty unique. It’s hard to find a comparable shoe with the same combination of flexibility, sensitivity, and grip at such a low cost. The durability is poor, but for the price it doesn’t really matter all that much. Given this, it is easy to recommend trying Feiyues out, but beginners should be very cautious or perhaps wait until they are a little more experienced. Those who have more experience should give Feiyues a try. You never know, you might like them much better than the shoes you normally wear, whether they are for martial arts or for parkour. If anything else, you can use them as a reliable practice shoe that will take the brunt of wear and tear,  all while being inexpensive to replace. For those looking for an affordable alternative to Vibrams, Feiyues are nearly unbeatable.

Note: Opt for the black version. The white ones look horrible after a very short time.

Nike Flex RN Review – Best Parkour Shoes

Whether you are into running, parkour, or cardio training, you know the importance of having the right shoes. With any of those sports, your feet are taking quite a hit and need something to not only protect them but also help them keep up with your level of performance. In this article, we will detail the Nike Flex RN model as well as some of its competitors to see if it really holds up as the choice shoe for those wanting to make an impact without taking the impact.

What Is the Nike Flex RN?

Nike Flex Rn

Nike is constantly putting new models on the market aimed at giving you better performance no matter what you are training for. Their running line is by far one of their most popular, so it is no surprise that there is yet another new model on the shelves.

The Nike Flex RN is one of Nike's lightweight options for runners, though many users prefer this model for all types of movement because of that lightweight feature in particular. It emphasizes comfort with a foam midsole and added heel support and it is well built to be comfortable and supportive for all types of foot shape and needs.

One feature Nike put a little more effort into with this new model is the durable rubber tread. This makes outdoor movement much less risky, even on wet surfaces. They have also added Flywire lacing, which means that the shoe should have a snug fit that is customizable for you no matter what. The Nike Flex RN is also supposed to enhance your natural stride, which should translate into being able to run for longer.

While we covered some of this above, there are a few additional specs we really want to highlight. What makes the Nike Flex RN stand out from its competitors is its versatility. Oftentimes there is little crossover between training shoes and running shoes, which means they are not interchangeable. This does not seem to be the case for the Nike Flex RN model.

With lightweight, knitted, moldable material, and durable terrain-focused tread, the Nike Flex RN model can be used in many different ways. Taking a trip to Italy and need some good walking shoes? The padded ankle cradle, added heel impact support, and foam midsole make it great for long-term use, and the added lacing system helps everything fit snuggly.

What about a daily run when pounding the pavement in rain or shine? The rubber tread, breathable knitting, and heel impact support means less slippage, more impact, and better sprinting too.

The Nike Flex RN model can supposedly hit those two opposing ends of the spectrum and everything in between. Parkour trainees will also benefit from these specs, as would trainers, joggers, or anyone who needs a reliable shoe with some versatility.

We picked a few similar products available on the market to see how they compare. With all the talk about how the Nike Flex RN should perform, we felt that putting it up against other similar models would help draw out its actual performance.

  • Dri-FIT fabric to wick away sweat and help keep you dry and comfortable
  • Slim fit for a close, comfortable feel
  • Rib V-neck with interior taping for a comfortable fit

Versatility of Use

Due to the various specs and features of the Nike Flex RN, it is a very versatile shoe as we went over earlier. When put to the test though, we did notice that they do not perform very well on gravel because of the tread design. There was some slippage, and it was not an even or comfortable impact. For other running terrains though, these worked well and were able to adapt to uneven ground as well.

Design Quality

Being such a versatile option means that this shoe will likely get used much more often. One concern we had in terms of its lifespan was how fast the tread would wear down and not be useful for wet weather. However, there have been little to no complaints on the quality of the Nike Flex RN.

A few things we want to note are the knitted mesh and the overall fit. The top of the shoe has a knitted material which, while helping with breathability, was not as cool as we had hoped for those hot days pounding the pavement. In terms of fit, those with wide feet will probably find issues with comfort in this shoe, which is unfortunate as the rest of the specs would make a great option for those with wider feet.

Warranty

Nike typically has a pretty good warranty for their shoes in particular. For their performance shoes, Nike will let you return them after trying them out (depending on the condition) if they just did not work for what you needed.

Pros

  • Rubber tread for wet weather
  • Versatile
  • Well-built sole and heel cradle for sprinting
  • Lacing system for customization

Cons

  • Narrow
  • Does not work for gravel
  • Not as breathable as other models

Nike Men’s Lunarglide 9 Training Shoes

Nike Women's Lunarglide 9 Running Shoe Black/White/Dark Grey/Wolf Grey...
  • Model Number: 904716001
  • Gender: womens
  • Color: BLACK/WHITE-DARK GREY

This model has been said to be the best running shoe for overpronation issues. With the build of the sole made for comfort as well as support, and the ankle and heel cradle working to support you as well, this model does perform well for those needing solid support while running.

Versatility of Use

These shoes operate solely as indoor running shoes (which will be discussed below) or as a daily shoe if you are on your feet a lot. A lot of users had issues running on gravel, wet terrain, or uneven terrain as these shoes have little to no gripping tread. If tread is not on your list of concerns, then give this model a shot. Otherwise, you may want to look elsewhere.

Design Quality

Something that is unlike the Nike brand is poor quality shoes. However, there have been complaints about this model in particular falling apart after a few months. The glue around the tread and sole seems to be the most troublesome area. Many users have also said that they only use this model indoors as the tread would wear down fast outside.

Warranty

Nike typically has a pretty good warranty for their shoes in particular. For their performance shoes especially, Nike will let you return them after trying them out (depending on the condition) if they just did not work for what you needed.

Pros

  • Good support for overpronation
  • Can be worn daily

Cons

  • Not well built
  • Tread has no grip
  • Hit or miss arch support

Nike Men's Air Zoom Terra Kiger 4 Running Shoes

Nike Men's Air Zoom Terra Kiger 4 Running Shoe (11,...
  • Flywire cables provide an adaptive fit.
  • Mesh upper provides ventilation and support.
  • Zoom Air units offer lightweight responsiveness.

This model is for those runners who love to be off the beaten path. It is built for support at different angles and designed for uneven ground with a variety of terrains. It has a lacing system to provide the most snug fit, so while you run through rocky, wet, or uneven terrain, your feet stay in tune with the support and fit they need.

Versatility of Use

Because this model needed certain specs and features for off-roading, so to speak, it operates very well as a rugged running shoe, but does not fit neatly into any other type of wear. The only other area we feel this model could perform well in would be hiking when you do not need heavier shoes as it encompasses some of the same needs as off-road running and is meant to be comfortable across many terrains.

Design Quality

For the most part, runners have appreciated the build, design, and durability of this model. It needs to be able to keep up with anything the trail can throw at it - and it does. The only issue we have seen is the structure of the ankle cradle. Some users have reported blistering because the back of the ankle cuff is slightly higher than normal.

Warranty

Nike typically has a pretty good warranty for their shoes in particular. For their performance shoes especially, Nike will let you return them after trying them out (depending on the condition) if they just did not work for what you needed.

Pros

  • Great tread for any terrain
  • Built in comfort for long and short runs
  • Long lasting and durable

Cons

  • Not versatile
  • Not lightweight

NIKE Men's Lunarepic Low Flyknit 2 Running Shoes

Nike Men Lunarepic Low Flyknit 2 Running (Black/White-Anthracite) Size...
  • Plush Flyknit bootie construction comfortably wraps the foot.
  • Laser-cut pods enhance cushioning.
  • Contoured Lunarlon foam midsole delivers an extremely smooth ride.

This model showcases lightweight performance. Between the sole and tread design and the breathable knitted top, they are meant to hit the ground running. Like the previous models, the Lunarepic includes Flywire to lock down your foot to ensure a snug fit that forms to all the right places in the shoes.

Versatility of Use

While reviewers have used this model as both a running shoe and a daily walking shoe, many have said that it has problems as a training shoe and for uneven terrain. In spite of its Flywire lacing, users reported their feet sliding around while changing directions, which means anything but flat ground and steady gaits is out of the question. This will be a disappointment for those wanting a shoe they can run and train in as training often includes side-to-side movement.

Design Quality

For an indoor running shoe, this model is great. It is lightweight and capable of a snug fit. Outside however, the tread catches pebbles and other small debris which can ruin it. It also is not built for quick turns or uneven terrain, leaving it well built, but only for a specific field of use.

Warranty

Nike typically has a pretty good warranty for their shoes in particular. For their performance shoes especially, Nike will let you return them after trying them out (depending on the condition) if they just did not work for what you needed.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Flywire lacing

Cons

  • Poor tread for outdoors
  • No added support for uneven terrain
  • Cannot handle side-to-side movement

Conclusion

While it is obvious that the Nike Flex RN has some competition, it definitely has its own little niche as well: versatility. If you are looking for a model that lets you do more than track or treadmill running (and more than running as well), then we would recommend giving these a go. From the specs and reviews, as well as our research into them, they have held up a lot of what makes them the most versatile running shoe.

Overall, given the features Nike added, and the design incorporated to ensure the Flex RN's success and durability, in combination with its inability to traverse gravel, and the let down in terms of breathability, we feel it deserves 4 out of 5 stars.

The ASICS Gel-Cumulus has since endured changes to improve on the design of the Dart 12. Its sole is different with a little more rubber on the mid-foot from the bottom, making it a lightweight shoe. The Nike shoe absorbs more shock from the super organic fibers, bringing in a new twist on this shoe attracting more buyers.

The foam on the midsole is a redesign comprising an additional FlyteFoam, different Gel placement and removed mid-foot plate of stability. The Dart 12 shoe caters for heel strikers, as it has stiffness in them and less cushioning, making them stiff.

The design in high wear areas uses upper carbon rubber to improve on the life of the Dart 12. It also has the original mesh adjusted to a more complex set of patterns and holes to make the breathability cool for any daily runner.

The lace system on the Nike Dart shoe composes minimalist eyelets, having laces move through the fabric to create foot pressure and loads offering more traction on the user. The guidance system on the Dart shoe controls neutral runners landing mechanics and also has a tongue that cushions and provides comfort.

The ASICS has a high-abrasion rubber in the outsole specific areas, ensuring the right grip where necessary and helping the shoe perform well over rain-slicked terrains.

The Nike Dart 12 is a kind of running shoes of high-quality standard for neutral runners. The Dart 12 has breathable mesh redesigned to the upper side as attached to the sole for air circulation on the feet.

  • The aesthetic design may not appeal to minimally minded users
Nike Men's Air Zoom Wildhorse 4 Running Shoes
  • High-abrasion rubber perimeter in a rugged Waffle outsole provides multi-surface traction and durability.
  • Midfoot fit system locks the foot down.
  • Zoom Air unit in the heel for low-profile, responsive cushioning.

Nike's Air Zoom Wildhorse 4 running shoes are similar trail running shoes to the Merrell Vapor Glove 2 but not quite as minimal. These shoes are inspired by the barefoot running shoe movement but have a touch more cushioning and foot protection than a true barefoot shoe like the Merrell Vapor Glove 2. The Wildhorse 4 boasts some premium features like a reinforced foot plate to give added protection on sharp or uneven surfaces plus a light cable wrap system on the forefoot.

The Nike Wildhorse 4 could be a great option for a parkour trainer or trail runner who wants the lightweight feel of a barefoot shoe but needs more cushioning underfoot. They will also provide slightly improved durability since they are made to absorb more shock. If you've never tried barefoot-style runners before these could be a perfect option to help you work on a mid-foot running technique. They could also be a great option if you're currently using traditional running shoes and just want to cut a bit of weight off your feet when you go off-road.

Breathability

With a blend of various synthetic upper materials, these shoes will be very breathable.

Durability

Though very lightweight, these shoes will provide solid durability.

Design Quality

These shoes have a classic and sporty design available in a range of colors.

Weight

At just 10.8oz for a full pair, these are amongst the lightest shoes available on the market.

Pros

  • In between a classic trail runner and a barefoot design
  • Added protection plate underfoot
  • Banded foot wrap
  • Many color selections including plain black
  • Light

Cons

  • More expensive than some options
Saucony Men's Peregrine 8 Running Shoe
  • EVERUN topsole
  • ISOFIT dynamic upper
  • PWRTRAC outsole

Saucony's Peregrine 8 running shoe represents a bigger and tougher offering for those looking to hit the streets or the trails with abandon. While these shoes share a neutral foot-strike with the Nike and Merrell options, they are considerably more cushioned and offer a stout two-part sole. The EVERRUN top sole provides premium cushion and energy transfer between the foot and shoe while the PWTRAC outsole gives high-end stability and foot protection.

Saucony finishes this shoe off with their PWRFOAM mid-sole to give a slight lift and added protection where you'll need it most. This is a great option for those who need more cushion than a barefoot shoe can provide but still want to get the benefits of a neutral strike shoe. With a high-grade and multi-level sole, they will also keep your joints happy during long runs and training sessions.

If you're in search of a mid-strike trail running shoe that will help you go easy on your knees and hips these could be worth a close look. You'll get excellent grip and durability without adding too much unnecessary weight.

Breathability

With added stability and cushion these shoes will sacrifice a bit of breathability.

Durability

These shoes are ultra-tough and will stand up to lots of abuse.

Design Quality

Though the Peregrine 8 is built for toughness and comfort they look like many running shoes before them.

Weight

Despite their durable sole, these shoes are very light at just 5.0oz per shoe.

Pros

  • Very light and durable
  • Extra cushion
  • Neutral foot strike performance

Cons

  • Plain and old-school design
  • Less direct contact with the running surface
Salomon Men's Speedcross 4 Trail Running Shoe
  • TRAIL RUNNING SNEAKER: Featuring an aggressive grip, precise foothold, & lightweight protection, the Salomon Speedcross...
  • ALL THE WILD PLACES: With a monster grip for soft trail conditions, the lightweight, highly cushioned Speedcross 4 is...
  • GO THE DISTANCE: Whether you love daily road running in your neighborhood, an escape to a local trail, or something more...

Salomon's Speedcross 4 trail runner marks the toughest and most aggressive competitor to the Merrell Vapor Glove 2. The standout feature of these shoes is Salomon's proprietary Speedcross lug pattern grip. This is a tread that looks as much like a truck tire as a sneaker sole and it's truly made for off-road use only. The Speedcross also boasts a high level of customization with their Sensifit with Quicklace system. This is a cable lace that pulls tightly and uniformly across the entire foot for a quick and secure fit.

At 10.5 ounces for the pair, they are slightly heavier than either the Nike or Saucony options but fall right in line with the Merrell Vapor Glove 2. A key difference about this trail runner, however, is that it is balanced for a heel-strike in the gait as opposed to a neutral strike. This will make these shoes feel far more like a traditional running shoe than any of the others and it will feel vastly different from the barefoot-inspired Merrell Vapor Glove 2.

These shoes would be an excellent option for trail runners and parkour practitioners who plan to stay completely on soft ground and need the utmost durability. They will provide maximum grip and durability, but won't give the seamless feel of a barefoot trail running shoe like the Merrell Vapor Glove 2.

Breathability ***

Like the Saucony shoes, these will breathe somewhat but not as well as other options.

Durability

Like most Salomon products, the Speedcross 4's are built like a tank.

Design Quality

These shoes come in a wide range of colors and have many innovative and unique design features.

Weight

While heavier than some options, these are still quite light for trail running shoes.

Pros

  • Powerful Speed cross tread
  • Quicklace design for easy, custom fit
  • Excellent durability
  • Good value for the price

Cons

  • Limited to trail running
  • Speedcross lug will wear quickly on any hard surface

Conclusion

One of the great draws about training for parkour is that there is not much specialized equipment needed to explore the sport. If you've got the physical aptitude, some comfortable clothes, a few good obstacles, and a lot of creativity you can be off and running within hours. The one key piece of equipment that you will need, however, is a great pair of shoes.

Whether you choose running shoes, skate shoes, cross trainers, or something else entirely, your feet will need a lot of support to endure parkour. The Merrell Vapor Glove 2 could be an ideal choice for parkour because it will provide a lot of comfort and stability while also giving a very intimate connection to the ground. A barefoot-style trail running shoe is in many ways the perfect choice for parkour as they are light and fast but without any unwanted bulk you might find on other shoes.

The Merrell Vapor Glove 2 is an innovative and well-designed shoe that will stand up to a surprising amount of abuse. If these shoes have anything less than a premium Vibram outsole we might question its durability. With such robust traction, however, we think this shoe will keep you cruising up walls and over handrails with just a bit of routine upkeep.

What sets these shoes apart from other barefoot-style trail runners for parkour is that they are completely washable and made from entirely vegan materials. With so many high-grade synthetics and recycled textiles on the market today it is becoming easier and easier to choose footwear that not only gives you the performance you demand but also some extra peace of mind. The Merrell Vapor Glove 2 completely fits that bill and we think these shoes are an excellent choice for anyone curious about the sport of parkour or a seasoned veteran looking to take their game up to a new level.

Adidas Energy Boost 3 Review

Let's talk about running shoes. Similar to most other sports, running can benefit from proper equipment and gear. Not only that, but you can save yourself a lot of pain and fatigue just by having the right pair of shoes to accompany you on whatever type of run you enjoy. To give you some shoes to look at, we are doing a comparison of the Adidas Energy Boost 3 against three other similar models. This should help you understand what each model can give you as a runner and what you may need from a running shoe as well.

What Are the Adidas Energy Boost 3?

As a running shoe, the Adidas Energy Boost 3 act as a cushioned and high energy sneaker for those wanting to do light or short runs. The Adidas Energy Boost 3 are designed to be a neutral training shoe, meaning that they can function both as training shoes and as running shoes. This is a big perk for some who cannot work out in running shoes since they tend to lack support and grip on side-to-side movements.

Adidas Energy Boost 3

Product Specs

Moving into specs, the Adidas Energy Boost 3 feature a stiff midsole and a well-cushioned heel, which may be an odd combination for some. Together with the Boost foam incorporated though, it produces a spring loaded but solid base. It is stiff, and that likely means that it will take much longer for it to wear down or deform.

What really helps the Adidas Energy Boost 3 get its bounce is the plastic runners. These are plates in the center of the shoe that are there to reduce torsion. Adidas has also added two on either side of the sole to keep things in place as well as give extra resistance on hard surfaces.

The outsole of the Adidas Energy Boost 3 is rubber, which means those who tend to wear the lining of a shoe down first would likely benefit from these. The actual bottom of the sole is exposed foam though, with a checkered pattern of rubber squares over it. We have some concerns with this pattern as it does leave foam exposed and will likely wear down faster.

In terms of the upper portion of the shoe, there was obviously thought that went into the look of the design. Lots of high tech or fashionable features like breathable mesh, an extra heel counter, and flat lacing make an appearance in the Adidas Energy Boost 3.

Pricing

Prices are always changing on the market, so what we have here is only an estimate; however, we will also include different places to look for the best deals on the Adidas Energy Boost 3.

How It Compares

We picked a few similar products available on the market to see how they compare.

NIKE Men's Air Zoom Wildhorse 4 Running Shoes
HOKA ONE ONE M Challenger ATR 4
Saucony Men's Peregrine 8 Running Shoe

Breathability

Durability

Design Quality

Here is where we find the most issues. As we mentioned before, the inner layer was not the best choice both because of breathability and for comfort. It is very easy to feel this separate piece inside the shoe as you run and this can easily cause blisters.

Moving on to the mid range of the shoe, there are plastic overlays on the exterior of the shoe on either side that form the Adidas logo. While this may look nice, it creates an uneven compression on your foot that is not comfortable and can be inconvenient if you are running on uneven surfaces.

Weight

Pros

  • Good spring and resistance
  • Good for outer sole runners
  • Breathable

Cons

  • Not flexible
  • Toe box can cause blisters
  • Easy to wear down center outer sole

Nike Men's Air Zoom Wildhorse 4 Running Shoes
  • High-abrasion rubber perimeter in a rugged Waffle outsole provides multi-surface traction and durability.
  • Midfoot fit system locks the foot down.
  • Zoom Air unit in the heel for low-profile, responsive cushioning.

These are trail running shoes, which means they need to be a little more durable (and probably bulkier) than other types. While this type of shoe is not typically flexible, it does try to make up for that in being protective and usable in any condition. The inner sole of the shoe provides great protection for your feet as you go across different terrains. It also has a great sticky rubber for the sole so wet conditions especially are much more manageable.

Breathability

The new midsole design of this shoe does have a negative influence on the breathability, as it covers about a third of the mesh top. Runners have not reported major issues, but it has definitely been noticeable.

Durability

There have been no issues with durability so far, which is good considering that the nature of this shoe requires it to be durable. This shoe is meant to fit snuggly every time you put it on, and users noted that even after putting in many miles, it still fit just a snug and kept its resistance.

Design Quality

Nike introduced a new midsole system with this model. It is much more snug and keeps your foot from moving or rocking laterally in the shoe while protecting your feet from slipping on wet surfaces and your ankles from collapsing every time you hit a tree root. Overall, runners have seen this as a long distance trail running shoe, as it performs well especially when you are feeling tired and are getting sloppy.

Weight

These weigh in less than the Adidas Energy Boost 3, which is surprising as these are trail runners and tend to be slightly bulkier. At only 11 ounces though, they could be considered a lighter weight trail running shoe.

Pros

  • Snug fit
  • Very protective
  • Minimizes lateral foot movement
  • Good for wet terrains

Cons

  • Less breathability
  • Not flexible
  • Midsole system not for everyone

HOKA ONE ONE Men's Challenger ATR 4 Trail Running Shoe Black/Kumquat...
  • Breathable seamless dual-layer mesh upper
  • Breathable textile lining for abrasion-free wear
  • Removable OrthoLite foam insole for a cooler, drier shoe environment

This model is a lightweight versatile option for those who run trails and roads. While not a full-fledged trail running shoe, it can hold its own on most well-kept terrain and still provide a lightweight experience there are well as on the road, track, or treadmill. These are a good, breathable option for those with wider feet as well, as build and sizing both accommodate that.

Breathability

Breathability was a priority for this model as the top section is a double layer of mesh. This not only increases breathability but also helps repel water and speed up drying times. So for those runners who want a lightweight shoe that breathes and helps keep your feet dry, you may want to check the ATR 4.

Durability

Overall, we were pleased with the ATR 4's durability. Even the upper mesh - often one of the first pieces to show wear - ended up being durable even on trail runs. While the sole will likely exhibit normal wear signs, even after going well into the double digits in terms of miles, we did not feel that they had begun to wear down.

Design Quality

The lugs are only 4 mm, which means they are not a great option for muddy paths or trails. Beyond that though, they have a slightly wider toe box and mid-range, so those with wider feet should be comfortable; but those in the average range should still be able to tighten down.

Weight

At only 9 ounces, this model is actually fairly lightweight. However, in order to achieve that, they did sacrifice some padding and protection around the heel in particular.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Versatile
  • Durable
  • Breathable

Cons

  • Not as padded
  • Do not work in mud
  • May not accommodate narrow feet

Saucony Men's Peregrine 8 Running Shoe
  • EVERUN topsole
  • ISOFIT dynamic upper
  • PWRTRAC outsole

This is a neutral trail running shoe. It is designed to be versatile enough to perform well on a variety of different terrains and provide support while doing so. It is designed to be stable going through uneven or unexpected terrains as well as provide traction and grip at the same time.

Breathability

There is an upper mesh that is both comfortable and very breathable. However, there is nothing stopping snow or water from getting in, which means that - as a terrain shoe especially - we were disappointed in the lack of follow-through.

Durability

Overall, these shoes proved to be quite durable. The tread especially is very durable (though we would recommend taking time to pull the small rocks out to keep that durability).

Design Quality

One area that we felt needed some attention was the resistance. There was not a lot of energy return, which was disappointing as they do advertise the shoes having a lot of return. Because of this, there will be some shock lines and creases that show on the sole.

Users have reported that this shoe tends to run a half size bigger, however blistering does not seem to be as big of a problem as with some shoes.

Weight

We would not classify this as a lightweight shoe, as it is around 11 ounces in a size 9.

Pros

  • Breathable
  • Durable
  • Versatile

Cons

  • No rebound
  • Not meant for wet weather
  • Runs big

Where to Buy

Amazon

Conclusion

After going through each of these models, we are returning to the Adidas Energy Boost 3. Overall, we feel it has some good qualities, with the main one being the foam chosen for the shoe. It really works well and gives good feedback and rebound. However, the cons really seem to outweigh the pros in this case with a design that took over functionality and even compromised it in some places. Given what we found in the rest of the shoes and how the Adidas Energy Boost 3 compare.
